PGS Vietnam Organic Standards applicable to producers are a set of standards drafted by the PGS Coordination Committee, referencing the IFOAM Basic Standards and the National Standards on organic production and processing.

Scope of application
Products covered and certification requirements
The PGS Standards apply to producers, including both crop cultivation and livestock farming. Separate standards for handling, processing, and retailing organic products enable PGS Vietnam to provide certification services from production all the way to retail sales for consumers.
The standards are presented to clarify the relationship between the general principles of organic agriculture and the specific requirements that farming households and fields must meet before obtaining certification.
How to read the standards
- General principles represent the desired goals of organic production.
- Recommended practices are suggestions for farmers to apply in the field; PGS Vietnam encourages adopting as many as possible, but they are not mandatory.
- Standards are fundamental mandatory requirements; farming households and fields must meet all standards before being certified organic.
Four principles of organic agriculture
Health — Ecology — Fairness — Care are the four principles that serve as the foundation for developing organic standards and production guidelines.
- Producing food with high nutritional value.
- Enhance biological cycles within the farming system.
- Maintain and enhance soil fertility.
- Work within a closed-loop system as much as possible.
- Prevent pollution from agricultural practices.
- Minimize the use of non-renewable resources.
- Maintain and protect the environment.
