Below are important notes from experts regarding sugarcane juice consumption.

Composition and nutritional value

Sugarcane juice has a naturally sweet flavor without artificial sugars, offering a refreshing taste with a subtle grassy aroma. This beverage helps cool the body and contains organic acids, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and natural carbohydrates. Although drinking sugarcane juice offers many benefits, experts advise caution and moderation.

Dr. Saurav Shishir Agrawal, Senior Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Medanta Hospital (India), shared: "Sugarcane juice is an excellent source of instant energy that helps prevent dehydration. It also supports skin health and bone and joint wellness."

According to The Pharma Journal, a 100 ml glass of sugarcane juice contains the following nutritional values: 242 kcal of energy, 0.16 grams of protein, 0.40 grams of fat, 0.56 grams of fiber, 12.85 grams of natural sugar, 150 mg of potassium, 1.16 mg of sodium, 13.03 mg of magnesium, and 1.12 mg of iron.

According to the Journal of Food and Nutrition Research, sugarcane juice consists primarily of water and simple carbohydrates. This composition helps provide instant energy and combat dehydration. Dr. Agrawal noted that thanks to its high electrolyte and sugar content, it makes an excellent beverage for athletes.

In addition, sugarcane juice contains many minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, and plant compounds that help reduce cellular damage. This supports a healthier immune system. Notably, fresh sugarcane juice retains nutrients lost during sugar refining. Among them is chromium, a mineral that helps improve glucose metabolism and reduces spikes in blood sugar compared to refined sugar.

Sugar content and groups that should limit consumption

However, sugarcane juice also has drawbacks due to its high natural sugar and calorie content. A standard serving can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar. This is especially concerning for individuals with diabetes, prediabetes, or insulin resistance. Dr. Gurusangappa S. Mudagall, Consultant Endocrinologist at Manipal Hospital, explained that frequent consumption can disrupt blood sugar control.

Experts advise that healthy adults may occasionally drink small amounts of sugarcane juice to stay hydrated. However, sugarcane juice must be freshly prepared and stored properly. People with diabetes, obesity, fatty liver, or metabolic syndrome should limit or avoid it. Sugarcane juice should not be used as a regular health-supplement beverage.
