Discarding lemon peel is a common habit for most people. However, according to several studies, it is a treasure trove packed with abundant vitamins and nutrients. So what unexpected health benefits does keeping lemon peel offer?
Contains powerful antioxidants
Lemon peel is rich in important antioxidants such as vitamin C, D-limonene, and the flavonoid hesperidin. These substances can strengthen the immune system and help reduce the risk of certain medical conditions.
Research indicates that the peels of citrus fruits provide more antioxidants than their juice or pulp. In particular, preliminary evidence on lemon peels shows that their antioxidant activity is even stronger than that of mandarin or pomelo peels.
Provides nutrients
Lemon peel is low in calories (only about 3 calories per tablespoon) but contains 1 gram of pectin fiber – an important type of dietary fiber. The peel of this fruit also provides 8 mg of calcium, small amounts of potassium and magnesium, and meets about 9% of the daily vitamin C requirement.
Supports oral health
Some studies indicate that lemon peel can support oral health by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity—the primary cause of tooth decay and gingivitis.
In another study, lemon peel extract was shown to combat Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which cause tooth decay. This further reinforces evidence that other components of this fruit may also offer similar benefits for oral health.
Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
Certain nutrients and antioxidants in lemon peel can help lower high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity—risk factors linked to cardiovascular disease. Overweight and obese adolescents who took supplements containing lemon peel saw reductions in both blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels.
Possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties
Laboratory studies show that lemon peel can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi. The natural antibacterial and antifungal compounds in lemon peel have the ability to fight against and reduce the growth of microorganisms on the skin and inside the body.
Combined with vinegar, lemon peels can be used to make an excellent all-purpose cleaner.
