Fruits eaten on an empty stomach that damage your stomach as much as alcohol

Everyone knows that alcohol is an "enemy" of the stomach, especially on an empty stomach. Without food to cushion it, alcohol (ethanol) makes direct contact and "scorches" the delicate lining, causing burning, congestion, and instant ulceration. However, Professor Li Zhigang from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine revealed a little-known fact: eating certain fruits on an empty stomach can harm your stomach just as much as drinking alcohol.
Among his patients was a woman in her 30s who suffered a stomach perforation from eating too many persimmons and drinking orange juice on an empty stomach. At the hospital, it was discovered that her stomach had long been riddled with ulcers without her knowing. As it turned out, wanting to lose weight, she ate fruit instead of rice or ate large amounts of fruit to reduce subsequent food intake. The only problem was that she mistakenly chose fruits that should never be eaten on an empty stomach.
Through this woman's story, Professor Li reminds everyone that even if you are "starving," you should never immediately eat the following 5 types of fruit:
1. Persimmons
The damaging power of persimmons lies in the combination of tannins and pectin. On an empty stomach, high acidity causes these substances to immediately precipitate into hard masses of bezoars. These "stones" constantly rub against the stomach lining, leading to gastrointestinal bleeding or stomach perforation—a severe physical injury on par with the effects of strong alcohol.
2. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in phenolic resins, which, when encountering a highly acidic environment on an empty stomach, turn into an insoluble gel that adheres tightly to the mucous membrane. This not only causes severe epigastric pain but also forms clumps that disrupt digestion, overloading stomach contractions and leading to acute gastritis.
3. Oranges
It is not uncommon for people to enjoy drinking orange juice or eating oranges for breakfast. Although very rich in nutrients, this fruit is not suitable for breakfast or on an empty stomach. Oranges are high in sugar and organic acids. Eating oranges on an empty stomach will irritate the gastric mucosa, increase stomach acid, and cause the spleen and stomach to feel bloated and acidic.
4. Bananas
Very few people know that eating bananas on an empty stomach causes a surge in blood magnesium levels, upsetting the magnesium-calcium balance and straining the cardiovascular system. At the same time, the acidity of bananas irritates the gastric autonomic nervous system, causing nausea, gnawing hunger, and disrupting natural peristaltic rhythm, contrary to the common belief that it provides quick energy.
Illustration5. Pineapple
Pineapple contains bromelain, an extremely potent proteolytic enzyme. When the stomach is empty, bromelain can attack the protein layer that forms the lining of the stomach and intestines. This biochemical erosion causes a burning sensation and dizziness, leading to damage to the stomach lining that is very difficult to heal if this habit is maintained over the long term.
What should you eat when hungry to protect and nourish your stomach?
To protect your digestive defenses, instead of choosing acidic fruits, prioritize foods that can neutralize stomach acid. Examples include:
- Warm porridge or soup. Forms a mucosal coating over the lining, soothing excess acid and effectively preventing mechanical damage.
- Boiled eggs. Provides pure protein to help neutralize gastric juices and create a long-lasting feeling of fullness without irritating the stomach lining.
Illustration- Oats. Contains soluble fiber that forms a protective gel layer, preventing direct acid contact with the mucous membrane.
- Bread. Has excellent gastric acid-absorbing properties, helping instantly relieve the gnawing and burning sensations on an empty stomach.
- Nuts and seeds. Almonds or walnuts provide healthy fats that help stabilize pH and slow down gastric acid secretion.
