The kidneys are composed of over a million nephrons, which function as a two-stage filter for blood. The glomerulus filters blood, and the tubule returns needed substances to the blood while removing wastes and extra water to produce urine.

Water helps that system function effectively. When properly hydrated, the kidneys can easily filter waste products, excess vitamins, and minerals out of the body through urine.

According to herbal practitioner Nguyen Tung Lam of the Do Minh Duong clinic, in addition to drinking enough water, certain foods such as the vegetables below are also beneficial for kidney health.

1. Garlic chives tonify the kidneys

In Eastern medicine, Chinese chives are known as a kidney-tonifying vegetable due to their potent ability to replenish yang qi. Chinese chives have a pungent taste and warm nature, with the effects of warming the middle burner, promoting qi circulation, and dispersing blood stasis. In particular, chive seeds are a key medicinal ingredient in remedies for nocturnal emission and erectile dysfunction, helping reinforce men's vitality. Chive leaves are best stir-fried with pork liver or shelled shrimp. This combination is not only delicious but also helps optimize the enhancement of male vigor.

According to research, Chinese chive leaf polysaccharide extract (CCP) has the ability to improve kidney function in mice with adenine-induced chronic renal failure. The protective mechanism may be related to CCP's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic activities.

2. Broccoli

A healthy renal system must first and foremost be a clean one. Broccoli acts as a natural filter that helps relieve stress on this organ. It effectively aids diuresis and electrolyte balance. The potent antioxidant compounds in this vegetable help prevent kidney stone formation and protect renal cells from the effects of aging.

3. Watercress for Detoxification and Diuresis

Watercress is a food that supports blood purification and excretion thanks to its abundance of essential minerals. It helps boost blood flow to the kidneys and supports the natural elimination of toxins through the urinary tract without exerting excessive pressure on the glomeruli.

Use them in soups or salads (ensuring a clean source of vegetables) to provide a fresh source of fiber and minerals for the body. Regarding watercress, although it is a good diuretic, it contains an amount of oxalates; if you have a history of oxalate kidney stones, it should be consumed in moderation.

Note: Individuals with chronic kidney disease or kidney stones should consult a physician regarding the potassium and phosphorus content in cruciferous vegetables.
