Cutting fruit without browning: Simple tips everyone should know
Many fruits like apples, pears, and bananas turn brown easily after being cut due to oxidation upon exposure to airUsing honey
Honey is considered an easy way to prevent cut fruits from browning while adding a sweet, natural aroma.
You can mix about 1 tablespoon of honey with 250 ml of water, stir well until dissolved, then soak the cut fruit in the mixture for a few minutes before consuming.
Use lemon juice
Lemon juice contains natural acids that can slow down fruit oxidation.
Dissolve 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a cup of warm water, then soak the peeled fruit for about 5 minutes and remove to drain. This method is especially effective for apples, pears, bananas, or tubers prone to browning such as potatoes.
Soaking in diluted salt water
Another common method is soaking the fruit in diluted salt water. Simply dissolve about 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 4 cups of warm water, soak the cut fruit for 5 minutes, then drain before serving.
Soaking in ice water
Placing cut fruit in a bowl of ice water also helps slow oxidation and keep it fresh and tasty for about 3-4 hours.
Wrap tightly with plastic wrap
Fruits easily turn brown when exposed directly to air. Therefore, after cutting, they should be stored in an airtight container or zip-lock bag, squeezing out excess air before putting them in the refrigerator. This method helps slow down the browning process.
Consuming carbonated drinks
Certain carbonated drinks containing citric acid can also help prevent fruit browning. You can soak the fruit in club soda or sugar-free carbonated water for about 5–7 minutes, then rinse or serve immediately.
Key tips for storing fruits
Use a clean, sharp knife when cutting fruit, as old or rusted knives can accelerate oxidation and cause the fruit to turn brown more quickly.
After washing or cutting, fruits should be stored in an airtight container or a zip-top bag and placed in the refrigerator to keep them fresh longer.
If the fruit is only slightly browned, you can sprinkle a little cinnamon powder on its surface. The aroma of cinnamon not only enhances the flavor but also masks the browning and slows down oxidation.
