The PGS Vietnam Organic Standards applied to producers are a set of standards drafted by the PGS Coordination Committee, referencing the IFOAM Basic Standards and the National Standards on organic production and processing.

Scope of application
Target producers and certification requirements
The PGS standards apply to producers, including both crop cultivation and animal husbandry. Standards for handling, processing, and retailing organic products are applied separately, enabling PGS Vietnam to provide certification services from production to sales to consumers.
The standards are presented to clarify the relationship between the general principles of organic agriculture and the specific requirements that farm households and fields must meet before receiving certification.
How to read the standards
- General principles are the expected goals of organic production.
- Recommended practices are suggestions for farmers to apply in the field; PGS Vietnam encourages applying them as much as possible, but they are not mandatory.
- Standards are mandatory basic requirements; farm households and fields must meet all standards before receiving organic certification.
Four principles of organic agriculture
Health — Ecology — Fairness — Care are the four principles that serve as the foundation for establishing organic production standards and guidelines.
- Produce food of high nutritional value.
- Enhance biological cycles within the farming system.
- Maintain and increase soil fertility.
- Work within a closed system as much as possible.
- Avoid causing pollution from agricultural farming.
- Minimize the use of non-renewable resources.
- Maintain and protect the environment.
