Survey to select suitable production areas by the MOAP Project Management Board

The project focuses on two northern mountainous districts, Lương Sơn and Tân Lạc in Hòa Bình province, where geographic conditions are suitable for organic production, helping improve the difficult livelihoods of ethnic minority people. Within the project, PGS is an activity emphasized throughout to strengthen the monitoring network and help farmers access the market.

Field conditions in Trại Hòa village

The entire Công field area, located in Trại Hòa village, Hợp Hòa commune, with a total area of 8 hectares adjacent to the mountain in a terraced field topography, isolated from the surroundings by a buffer zone formed by surrounding melaleuca trees, is the site included by the Lương Sơn District People's Committee in the conversion plan under this project.

Currently, the Lương Sơn District People's Committee has assigned the District Agriculture Department together with the Hợp Hòa Commune People's Committee to build in-field roads and re-plan the entire area for conversion to fully closed organic production, including cultivation, animal husbandry, and aquaculture, combined with the exploitation of local products under PGS supervision.

The project will link production with supply chains, continuing to leverage the strengths of the PGS system to monitor and ensure quality all the way to consumers' dining tables. In addition, an area of more than 20 hectares in Tràng Bái field, Đồng Sương village, Thành Lập commune, adjacent to three organic production groups—Đồng Sương, Cây Gạo, and the in-conversion group Nà Lều—will be planned for organic rice cultivation.

In Tân Lạc district

On the same day in Tân Lạc district, the Project Management Board traveled tens of kilometers over steep mountain passes to reach the production area. Quyết Chiến is the first among five highland communes of Tân Lạc, the gateway to Thung Mây, introduced by Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee Bùi Văn Nhỏ and Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department Vũ Quang Hùng.

Amid the sweltering summer heat of the lowlands, this place still features tomato fields with red ripe fruits, French bean fields heavy with pods, cabbage heads mixed with unharvested grass, and sprawling chayote trellises—a scene typically only seen during the winter crop months in the lowlands.

A particularly impressive aspect is that there is not a single trace of herbicides here. Vice Chairman of the Commune Bùi Văn Bến said that Quyết Chiến has long said no to herbicides. This is truly an ideal location for the MOAP project to boldly pilot the conversion of part of the area to off-season organic vegetable cultivation combined with poultry farming to supply lowland markets.
