Cutting Fruit Without Worrying About Browning: Simple Tips Everyone Should Know

Many fruits like apples, pears, or bananas easily turn brown after cutting due to oxidation when exposed to air

Using Honey

Honey is considered a simple way to keep peeled fruit from turning brown while adding a naturally sweet aroma.

You can mix about 1 tablespoon of honey with 250 ml of water, stir well until dissolved, and soak the cut fruit for a few minutes before serving.

Using Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains natural acids that can slow down the oxidation process in fruits.

Stir 1 tablespoon of lemon juice into a cup of warm water, then soak the peeled fruit for about 5 minutes before removing and draining. This method is especially effective for apples, pears, bananas, or root vegetables that easily turn brown, such as potatoes.

Soaking in Dilute Salt Water

Another popular method is soaking fruit in diluted salt water. Simply dissolve about 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 4 cups of warm water, soak the cut fruit for 5 minutes, then remove and drain before serving.

Soaking in Ice Water

Placing cut fruit in a bowl of ice water also helps slow down oxidation and keeps it fresh and crisp for about 3–4 hours.

Wrapping Tightly with Food Wrap

Fruits brown easily when exposed directly to air. Therefore, after cutting, store them in an airtight container or a zip-top bag, pressing out excess air before putting them in the refrigerator. This helps limit the browning process.

Using Carbonated Drinks

Some carbonated drinks contain citric acid, which can also help reduce fruit browning. You can soak the fruit in club soda or sugar-free soft drinks for about 5–7 minutes, then rinse or serve immediately.

A Few Notes on Preserving Fruits

Always use a clean, sharp knife when cutting fruit, as dull or rusty knives can accelerate oxidation, causing fruits to brown faster.

After washing or cutting, store fruit in an airtight container or zip-top bag and keep it in the refrigerator to prolong freshness.

If the fruit has just started to brown slightly, you can sprinkle a little cinnamon powder over the surface. The aroma of cinnamon not only enhances the flavor but also masks minor browning and slows down oxidation.
