Sala - the "carefree" tree being sought after by garden enthusiasts

The Sala tree (or Vô ưu tree), with its meaning of serenity, is being considered for planting within home gardens.

In the trend of bringing nature back to the center of living spaces, more and more owners of garden houses, suburban villas, or large land funds are looking for plant species that not only create a landscape but also convey spiritual values.

Origin

The Sala species commonly grown in Vietnam today has the scientific name Couroupita guianensis, originating from South America and thriving in tropical climates such as the Amazon basin, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Although not completely identical to the Sala tree in ancient Buddhist scriptures, Couroupita guianensis is still called Sala thanks to its imagery and symbolic meaning associated with Buddhism, especially the spirit of "Vô ưu" (Carefree) – letting go of worries and heading towards peace.

Sala is a large woody tree that can reach 20-35m in height when mature, with a wide canopy and strong roots. Flowers grow directly from the trunk and base, hanging in long clusters and blooming profusely from around February to May. At night, the flowers emit a refreshing fragrance, creating a relaxing feeling for the surrounding space.

These characteristics make Sala unsuitable for small townhouses but very suitable for types of housing with large gardens such as detached villas, suburban garden houses, resorts, and eco-homestays.

Feng Shui Meaning

According to Feng Shui experts, Sala can be planted in residential areas, provided it is placed in the right position. The tree carries a deep, stable energy, leaning towards stillness, suitable for creating landscape highlights and balancing emotions.

Homeowners should plant Sala in a garden corner, backyard, or miniature landscape area, avoiding planting it directly in front of the house door or close to the building. A large tree canopy that blocks too much light can affect the vitality of the house if placed incorrectly.

When planted away from the main living area, Sala helps create a resort space right within the home grounds, especially suitable for owners who love meditation, yoga, or a slow living style.

In terms of landscape, Sala creates a rare highlight thanks to flowers growing from the trunk – a feature very few tree species possess. When in full bloom, the tree transforms the garden into a special space with aesthetic depth.

Spiritually, Sala is believed to bring a sense of stillness, helping to reduce stress, especially in increasingly noisy living environments. Some parts of the tree are also used in folk medicine to brew flower tea for cooling or to support the mild treatment of some common ailments.

In addition, for real estate aiming for resort or green lifestyles, having a long-standing Sala tree in the premises also helps increase the landscape value and the story for the house.

Proper Planting Techniques

When planting Sala in the yard, homeowners should choose a clear, sunny location with loose, well-drained soil. The tree can be grown from seeds, cuttings, or seedlings.

For seedlings (meaning young trees already nurtured with soil around the roots), the soil around the roots should be kept intact, a hole about 20-30cm deep should be dug, and the bottom lined with soil mixed with organic fertilizer.

After planting, cover with soil 1-2cm higher than the root ball and compress firmly so the tree stands steady. In the first few years, water regularly so the soil does not get too dry. Once the tree is stable, Sala requires very little care, only needing periodic fertilization every few years.

Due to the strong development of the canopy and roots, Sala should not be planted too close to the house, fences, or drainage systems.

Most importantly, Sala is a large, long-lived tree. Before planting, homeowners need to consider the long-term planning of the land to avoid having to cut it down when the tree has matured.
