Composition and nutritional value
Sugarcane juice has a naturally sweet taste, contains no artificial sugars, and offers a fresh flavor with a hint of grassy aroma. This beverage helps cool down the body, containing organic acids, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and natural carbohydrates. Although drinking sugarcane juice has many benefits, experts recommend that consumers be cautious and consume it in moderation.
Dr. Saurav Shishir Agrawal, Senior Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Medanta Hospital (India), shared: "Sugarcane juice is an excellent source of instant energy, helping to prevent dehydration. It also supports skin and bone health."
According to The Pharma Journal, a 100 ml glass of sugarcane juice contains the following nutritional components: 242 kcal of energy, 0.16 grams of protein, 0.40 grams of fat, 0.56 grams of fiber, 12.85 grams of natural sugar, 150 mg of potassium, 1.16 mg of sodium, 13.03 mg of magnesium, and 1.12 mg of iron.
According to the Journal of Food and Nutrition Research, sugarcane juice consists primarily of water and simple carbohydrates. This composition helps provide instant energy and combat dehydration. Dr. Agrawal noted that, thanks to its high electrolyte and sugar content, this is a very good drink for athletes.
In addition, sugarcane juice contains many minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, and plant compounds that help reduce cellular damage. This supports a healthier immune system. Notably, fresh sugarcane juice retains nutrients lost during the sugar refining process. Among these is chromium, a substance that helps improve glucose metabolism and reduces spikes in blood sugar levels compared to refined sugar.
Sugar content and groups that should limit consumption
However, sugarcane juice also has drawbacks due to its high natural sugar and calorie content. A standard serving can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This is particularly concerning for individuals with diabetes, prediabetes, or insulin resistance. Dr. Gurusangappa S. Mudagall, Consultant Endocrinologist at Manipal Hospital, explained that regular consumption can disrupt blood sugar control.
Experts recommend that healthy adults can occasionally drink sugarcane juice in small amounts to rehydrate. However, the sugarcane juice must be freshly prepared and stored. People with diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, or metabolic syndrome should limit or avoid using it. Sugarcane juice should not be used as a regular health supplement beverage.
