Eating bananas daily keeps blood pressure levels safe and things to keep in mind
When it comes to lowering blood pressure, many people are often reminded of the importance of cutting back on salt in their diet. However, there is another measure that also helps control blood pressure effectively but receives less attention: Increasing potassium.
Research shows that adding more potassium to daily meals is a simple, even delicious way to keep blood pressure levels at a safe level.
Nearly half of adults in the U.S. are living with hypertension. In this context, dietary adjustments play a pivotal role.
Bananas, a familiar fruit, stand out as one of the abundant sources of potassium. Expert Michelle Routhenstein said that bananas often get a bad reputation for their sugar content, but in reality, this fruit can help lower blood pressure through various mechanisms.
So, what positive effects do bananas have on blood pressure control?
Helping eliminate excess sodium from the body
Studies indicate that most Americans are consuming sodium above recommended levels, a factor that increases the risk of high blood pressure. The potassium in bananas can help balance this adverse impact.
According to nutritionist Sheri Gaw, potassium is a mineral that helps lower blood pressure by supporting the kidneys in excreting sodium, regulating fluid volume in the body, and dilating blood vessels.
A medium-sized banana provides about 420mg of potassium. You can slice bananas to eat with cereal, yogurt, sandwich them with peanut butter or almond butter bread, or blend them into smoothies. This is a simple, easy-to-implement way that provides a long-lasting feeling of fullness, contributing to natural blood pressure control.
Helping dilate blood vessels
Potassium in bananas helps balance the amount of sodium in the body, thereby supporting the relaxation of blood vessel walls. When blood vessels dilate, blood flows more easily, contributing to naturally lower blood pressure.
Not only potassium, but bananas are also a surprising source of antioxidants, especially catechins, compounds that help blood vessels dilate. According to expert Michelle Routhenstein, these antioxidants also reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the vessel walls, factors closely related to hypertension.
Supporting gut health
"Recent research shows that a healthy gut may be linked to lower blood pressure," Routhenstein said. Bananas also contribute to improving the digestive system through this mechanism.
A medium-sized banana provides about 3 grams of gut-friendly fiber. In particular, if eaten while still slightly green, this fruit also contains resistant starch - a special type of fiber that helps feed beneficial gut bacteria, creating conditions for them to grow and function more effectively.
Is eating bananas every day safe?
According to nutritionist Sheri Gaw, for most people, eating one banana a day is generally safe and also helps supplement fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants beneficial for health.
Expert Michelle Routhenstein also agrees, suggesting that the habit of eating one banana a day is appropriate for most healthy adults while providing benefits from potassium and antioxidant content.
However, both noted that eating too many bananas may not be suitable for certain groups, such as people with diabetes, kidney disease, or those taking certain medications.
Specifically, for people with diabetes, bananas can quickly increase blood sugar, especially when eaten alone. According to Gaw, this risk is reduced if bananas are eaten with a source of protein and fat, such as a tablespoon of peanut butter, a handful of nuts, or a slice of cheese.
Additionally, people with kidney disease may need to limit banana consumption, because decreased kidney function makes it difficult for the body to eliminate excess potassium, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular and muscle disorders.
Routhenstein emphasized that those taking medications that can increase blood potassium levels or who are instructed to limit potassium should talk to their doctor before including bananas in their daily diet.
