Bioactive Compounds and Initial Studies

According to the research team from the Institute of Tropical Biology (now the Institute of Life Sciences) under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, plant species belonging to the genus Curcuma (Ginger family - Zingiberaceae) have long been widely utilized due to their abundance of natural bioactive compounds, finding applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and health supplements.

Among these, Curcuma aromatica Salisb.—often growing wild or cultivated across various localities in Vietnam—is a highly promising indigenous species containing curcumol, a sesquiterpenoid compound proven to offer anti-inflammatory effects, liver protection, and inhibition of cancer cell proliferation.

In Vietnam, initial research on Curcuma aromatica laid its groundwork through a provincial-level science and technology project in Tra Vinh Province during the 2017–2019 period.

The obtained results indicated that Curcuma aromatica adapts well to alluvial soils, demonstrates steady growth, and delivers high yields when cultivated at optimal plant density with organic fertilizers.

Biological Activity and Toxicity Testing

Bioassays revealed that extract derived from Curcuma aromatica rhizomes possesses pronounced antioxidant capabilities and effectively suppresses the growth of several cancer cell lines in experimental models.

Notably, toxicity assessment studies demonstrated that the Curcuma aromatica extract exhibits a high level of safety, showing no adverse impacts on biochemical, hematological, or histological indicators in laboratory animals.

Standardizing the Extraction Process and Tablet Formulation

Building on these remarkable characteristics, the research team from the Institute of Tropical Biology (now the Institute of Life Sciences) - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology implemented a pilot production project titled "Standardizing the Production Process for Health Supplements Containing Curcuma aromatica Salisb. Extract."

The research team from the Institute of Tropical Biology (now the Institute of Life Sciences) - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology carries out the pilot production project to finalize the manufacturing process for health supplements containing Curcuma aromatica Salisb. extract.

The project successfully standardized the Curcuma aromatica extraction process on a semi-industrial scale capable of handling hundreds of kilograms of raw materials per batch, while strictly controlling technical parameters to ensure extract quality and consistency.

On that basis, quality specifications for the extract were established in compliance with the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia. Utilizing this standardized extract, the research team proceeded to formulate and develop the manufacturing process for dietary supplement tablets.

In Vivo Results and Future Research Directions

Results from animal trials showed that the product containing Curcuma aromatica extract boosts immune response and aids liver protection, as evidenced by marked improvements in biochemical markers related to hepatic function and oxidative stress.

Significantly, the product exhibited high safety profiles over prolonged administration, with no abnormal hematological, biochemical, or histological observations recorded. These outcomes confirm that the product not only delivers biological efficacy but also satisfies rigorous safety criteria.

The research team noted that in the coming period, they will continue monitoring long-term subchronic toxicity, evaluate product stability over time, and expand research across diverse experimental models and target populations.
