Joint field training between the Sub-Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Medicine and Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy goes beyond disease prevention, serving as a vital link in controlling the quality of agricultural products supplied to city residents.

Field activities of preventive medicine students
Continuing the cooperative tradition established in 2012, in March 2026, 36 preventive medicine medical students (Class Y6THDP K14) took part in a meaningful field trip. The "One Health" approach in Hai Phong has broadened its scope: Human health is only genuinely safeguarded when food sources from livestock and aquaculture are strictly controlled from breeding stock to the dining table.
At livestock farming and slaughtering facilities across An Duong, An Hai, and An Phong wards, students not only investigated animal diseases but also directly observed the production processes of agricultural goods. This provided future physicians with the opportunity to understand that clean meat or safe eggs must not only be pathogen-free, but also free from antibiotic residues and toxic chemicals.
Controlling Risks from Slaughterhouse and Livestock Farming Fieldwork
During the three-day study tour, the student delegation focused on key aspects closely tied to local agricultural production practices:
Identifying hazards at slaughter facilities: Monitoring veterinary hygiene procedures to ensure agricultural products brought to market do not carry infectious pathogens or cause food poisoning.
Consulting livestock farmers: Guiding farming households in applying biosecure farming practices to minimize the overuse of veterinary drugs—the primary driver of antimicrobial resistance in humans.
Linking market consumption and food safety: Understanding the relationship between animal welfare and the economic value of agricultural products. Healthy livestock is a prerequisite for high-quality farm produce, meeting the consumption standards of urban Hai Phong.
Building a Mindset of "Clean Agriculture for Community Health"
In the context of complex disease outbreaks and growing market demand for organic and clean produce, an interdisciplinary mindset is crucial for future professionals. Giving medical students field exposure to veterinary science helps them clearly recognize that protecting public health must begin with securing a safe living environment and pathogen-free agri-food sources. Practical knowledge of local disease situations and prevention measures equips future preventive doctors with a holistic perspective to formulate public health strategies intertwined with food security.
This collaborative training program is a practical model that not only enhances students' competencies but also contributes to establishing a sustainable agri-food monitoring system, working towards a healthier and safer Hai Phong.
